Nevada Women’s Film Festival runs June 19 -22, 2025 with a stunning lineup of 47 films screening at UNLV. The festival started 11 years ago in honor of Women’s History month, and has consistently provided a platform for women and historically marginalized voices. The films NVFF showcases feature a strong and diverse female presence, and tell stories which depict a spectrum of worldviews, backgrounds and experiences. Latinx contributions to this year’s lineup include:
Thursday, June 19, 2:40pm – 4:30pm, Shorts Block 2
Cautivas, a documentary from El Salvador directed by Itxaso Diaz, explores one of the most restrictive laws in the world on abortion. Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
In Debajo de Tu Piel, an experimental documentary from Spain/Mexico directed by Monserrat Merlo, a woman delves into the photographs and memories of her “mother” in order to reconstruct the gaze and past of that woman who now appears distant to her. Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
Thursday, June 19, 4:45pm – 6:15pm. Shorts Block 3
The short drama Gallina, directed by Ana Arza, takes us to a farm in Paraguay in 1999 when the country is undergoing political and social turmoil, and a tough decision must be made. Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
Thursday, June 19, 7:45pm – 9:50pm, Shorts Block 5
In the dramatic comedy Session, written and directed by local filmmaker Jose Anthony with a cast of local actors, five people attend a court ordered therapy session and reveal a little too much about the circumstances that brought them there. Presented in English.
Friday, June 20, 1:15pm – 3:15pm, Shorts Block 7
Frosting, produced by Las Vegas filmmaker Guillermo Barahona, is a drama about Holly, a high-strung millennial who’s delighted to have her favorite younger cousin, Jessica, visit for the weekend. Jessica has other plans, and shares news that changes Holly’s understanding of identity, maturity, and family. Presented in English.
Friday, June 20, 6:45pm – 8:30pm, Block 10
Riot in Bloom is an independent feature film created by three award winning female filmmakers/educators from UNLV’s Department of Film, including Brett Levner (Story By/Director), Roudi Boroumand (Screenwriter/Casting Director) and May May Luong (Producer). This female trifecta is collaborating together to create a female driven comedy about life after divorce. Local actress Kristina Hernandez plays one of the main characters. Presented in English. The film premier will be followed by a party 8:30pm – 10:00pm.
Sunday, June 22, 2:50pm – 4:35pm, Shorts Block 17
In El Dia de Mi Independencia, a short drama from Chile, seven-year-old Manuela dreams of winning the “best folkloric dress” contest while her teenage brother Gabo takes the risk of protesting in the streets to put an end to the dictatorship of Chile in 1988. Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
A rarely told story about a Latinx immigrant community’s successful journey to change legislation and protect families, Expanding Sanctuary, is a short documentary from the United States, directed by Kristal Sotomayor. Presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
